how often should you mow your lawn

While PowerPro is known far and wide as THE homeowner’s power equipment destination, one of the most common questions we answer isn’t about machinery — it’s about grass. Many homeowners want to know, “How often should you mow your lawn?”. That answer depends on the season and the weather conditions, but generally you’ll want to mow your lawn every 4 to 10 days. Keep reading our blog as we break down that range into specific suggestions for spring, summer, and fall!

From our experience, the two reasons that homeowners want to know how often to mow is generally because they want to have the healthiest and most attractive lawn — or they want to maximize their precious time by only mowing when they need to. How Often Should You Cut Your Grass? Answers by Season

If you’re wondering how often should you cut your grass, the answer depends largely on the season and the weather. Cold Pennsylvania winters guarantee that you’ll generally be able to leave your mower in storage from the end of November through the end of February. However, you’ll be mowing regularly the rest of the year — so let’s dig into what that looks like!

How Often to Cut Grass in Spring?

Getting into a rhythm and figuring out how often to cut grass in spring is something lots of homeowners struggle with. When spring starts in earnest with warmer days and nights that stay above 50 degrees, you’ll want to mow every 6 to 7 days. The 50 degrees at night figure is crucial as grass seed typically won’t grow particularly effectively if the temperature drops below that point. Mowing every 6 to 7 days should be a good rhythm to keep your lawn healthy, attractive, and at a manageable length.

However, one important thing to keep in mind about how often to cut grass in spring is that when the weather starts to resemble summer, you have to mow like it’s summer — regardless of what the calendar says.

Every spring, homeowners wonder if they should repair or replace their mower — we have guidance!

How Often Should You Mow Your Lawn in the Summer?

One of the most common questions we hear is, “How often should you mow your lawn in the summer?” Over the summer you’ll generally mow your lawn every 4 to 6 days.

If there is a lot of rain or if you fertilize heavily, you’ll want to mow every 4 days to keep your grass from getting too long. However, when the weather is hot and generally dry, you’ll be safe to mow either every 5 or 6 days. Ultimately, during the summer, you should expect to almost never wait a whole week to mow your lawn.

Waiting too long to mow your lawn can overwork and damage older mowers — learn about our lawn mower repair service.

One other exception to the rule about how often should you mow over the summer is that during periods of extreme drought, where grass essentially stops growing temporarily, you’ll want to wait around 10 days to mow. If you maintain your standard mowing regimen during a drought, you’ll end up with a very brown looking lawn.

How Often to Mow Your Lawn in the Fall?

Figuring out how often to mow your lawn in the fall is fairly similar to the spring. When the weather is more akin to summer (in September and early October), you’ll want to mow around every 6 days. However, as the temperature starts to drop consistently, your frequency will, too. Eventually you’ll be mowing every 8 or 9 days before stopping entirely and breaking out the snow blower for winter.
